Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
