Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15-20x above acceptable limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes

Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the city as winter approaches.

However earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership appealed to the highest court to seek a relaxation of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific hours throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination peaking around midnight to some of the worst measurements observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have continued as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the city as colder air sets in.

Medical and Financial Toll

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is enormous, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing approximately 10k premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
